Another old song of mine: What Have You Done?

"What Have You Done?" is my attempt at a Jeremiad. It was one of the first songs in recent memory where I did not play the bass - a pattern I've repeated since then, since I was happy with this one. The mix is a little bass-heavy, and I ... sing... in it.

Like I've hinted before, I'm working on a new release. Due to the impact it has on everything lately, the release is called "Time" -- here's the first track I've completed on the thing.

That's the first line in a book from Heaton Research. I own it, but the opening line is hilarious.

"Winter" is a song I recorded shortly before my father died. He heard it before he died - I played this version for him. He'd never heard anything I'd recorded, and it remains special to me if only for that reason.

It's been... September since I last blogged. That's a long time, even though I've had other periods where I've been rather underground - but then I had an excuse: my job was in the public eye, more or less, and I had to write on a daily basis. While what I wrote wasn't mine all that much, it was still writing and took up time and energy for writing.

In the meantime between then and now, I've just not had the interest, focusing on other things. Here's what they are.

My advice on how to vote

I don't normally tell people how to vote in the US - just to vote - but by gum, I'm as mad as I can be. I'm not going to tell you for whom to vote, nor can I tell you who I'll vote for, but I'll tell you this: my vote is for sale to any politician who'll meet these requirements.

Spring changes its license structure

The reason SpringSource's license change bothers me so much is not the specific change. It bothers me because Spring has done a good job embedding itself in successful projects, and now they've shown that they're willing to change the license, and I have no guarantee or confidence they won't change it to something more onerous in the future.

I spent a lot of time on a specific architectural piece on an application I'm writing, only to run up against some thorny concurrency issues. I've always said that you should measure before optimizing; I didn't follow my own advice. Here's what I found when I decided to use completely unoptimized code... man, was I dumb.

It's like boxing: is Boxer A better than Boxer B?
